According to the Singapore Economic Development Board, analytics has been identified as a growth sector that will contribute S$1 billion dollars to the economy by the end of 2017. There will be a need for an additional 2,500 analytics professionals in the next five years. The demand for well-trained analytics professionals with undergraduate degrees is envisaged to exceed the supply of such professionals.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics with Minor is a four-year direct honours programme. Students are required to complete a total of 200 credit units (cu), inclusive of 40 cu of Common Curriculum courses. The Common Curriculum courses are first-year inter-disciplinary courses designed to hone students' conceptual, analytical and writing abilities along with their communication skills. Students are also required to complete a 24-week work attachment, an overseas experience and a service-learning project. Singapore University of Social Sciences aims to produce graduates who are professionally competent, social-minded and self-directed learners.
The academic admission requirements to the full-time programme are: (a) at least three passes in H2 content subjects; or (b) a local polytechnic diploma, or an international baccalaureate diploma or a diploma from NUS High School; or (c) an equivalent of (a) or (b). Applicants with (c) have to submit SAT1 scores. There will be additional admission criteria to select students who are aligned to the educational philosophy of our full-time programmes. This will be done through interviews and selection tests.
In addition, applicants are required to meet one of the following minimum eligibility criteria:
- At least a B4 grade in GCE 'O' level Mathematics, or
- A pass in GCE 'O' level Additional Mathematics, or
- A pass in GCE 'H1' level Mathematics or Statistics, or
- A pass in GCE 'A' level Mathematics
Mathematics courses taken at the diploma level will be considered if applicants do not meet the above minimum eligibility criteria.
Graduates are trained in the application of a broad array of analytics techniques such as visualisation, data mining, text mining, statistics, forecasting and optimisation using analytics software so that they can apply them in a broad spectrum of organisations and sectors, including government, healthcare and medicine, community, business, social services – essentially any organisation with a lot of data that require analytical insights.
Students pursuing the full-time Major-Minor programmes are required to complete 200 credit units (cu), which include:
- 40 cu of Common Curriculum
- 100 cu of Major Courses: 95 cu Compulsory Courses + 5 cu Elective Course
- 40 cu of Minor Courses
- 10 cu of an Integrative Course
- 10 cu of an Applied Project
